The first reference to fatherhood happens before there is any father (Adam and Eve were created). God introduces family at the creation while instituting marriage. The first command is for the man to leave his father and to be united to his wife. Interestingly, Jesus said that every man who leaves his father and mother for the sake of the kingdom of God will receive a hundred times more and eternal life. Jesus left His father and mother and went to the temple when He was a young boy. A father has his children for a short time to prepare them for their departure. God left Adam in the garden and Adam sinned; and, then, God had to prepare them for life in the fallen world. He started that teaching by killing the first animal and making clothes for them - so, modeling His giving us Jesus and dying for us to clothe us with His righteousness. So, too, my foremost lesson as a father should be salvation.
